  • Marlene’s Tea & Cakes

    November 3rd, 2023

Marlene’s is a lovely tea house in the Fairbanks Ranch area of San Diego. Driving to it is a weird and windy and the location is an oddly residential looking space. There’s a little parking lot to the side of the shopping center Marlene’s is located in and there’s a good amount of street parking in the surrounding area.

The way things work at Marlene’s is a little odd but I like it. It’s a prefix, prepay menu. For two of us the total cost was $114.43, which includes tip (something I appreciate). We arrived a bit before our reservation time at 11 and we were sat at a cute table that had our tea prepared and waiting for us. It was a lovely thing to be able to sit down and immediately pour ourselves a cup.

The first course was a Loaded Baked Potato Soup. Overall, this was bland and forgettable. It probably would have been better had I been able to eat the topping as it was probably the crucial salt component that was missing. The crisp on top was delicious, I wish I had more of those.

A 3 tiered stand that was full of the rest of our meal was delivered to our table which was impressive and delightful looking. We started at the bottom and worked our way up. In hindsight we would start in the middle with the scones, and then do the savory course to finish with the sweets at the top. Starting at the bottom made us miss having something savory to break things up as it is a sweet heavy meal flavor wise. The savory sandwiches at the bottom were mostly good with a few misses.

There was the standard tea favorite, a Cucumber Sandwich. It was pretty good, I could have used more of the cream cheese spread as that holds most of the flavor, but I would eat a lot of these if they were on the table. 9/10

Another standard with Egg Salad. The bread was a light choux pastry and there was a cute addition spinach at bottom. But the egg salad itself needed more seasoning, this one was forgettable. 5/10

A small Beef Wellington was something I haven’t seen before. The meat inside was well cooked meat and extremely tender but (an unfortunate reoccurring theme here) bland. Some kind of sauce inside would have done a lot to help. 6/10

A unexpected treat was a Red Onion Tart with Peach Jam. This was flavor packed. The caramelized onions were delicious mellow flavor and paired wonderfully with the peach jam on top. 10/10

A Turkey Cranberry Ruben was an oddball. It had a decent start with a nice cranberry bite, but was overwhelmed by a heavy mayo flavor. 6/10

The middle tier was the scone tier and the reason why I’ll return. This month featured a pear scone. It was unique, moist and full of chunks of pear. I have never had a scone quite this moist, light and almost muffin top crumb before. It was delicious and I’m VERY curious what their next flavor will be. This tier also had some cute fruit as well as clotted cream; while tasty they are definitely supporting characters next to the scone. 11/10

The top teir was the sweets/dessert tier.

A small cup of what I think was Lemon Pannacotta. This was very light and had a delightfully refreshing lemon flavor. Save this one for last! 9/10

Millionaire/Carmel cheesecake looked very cute but was overpowering. Very strong flavors combined with a very sweet profile made it too much for my tastes. 5/10

A appealing Fruit Tart topped with raspberry, blackberry, pineapple and kiwi. It was basic but tasted good! 7/10

Something I haven’t seen before was an Italian cream cake – walnuts are nice. Very sweet, Icing is overpowering the flavor of the cake 4/10

Overall it was a lovely tea service. My friend and I could not get over how good the scone was and will be returning again if only to see what the new flavor is. Oh! And the Lemon cucumber water they served their was a 10/10!

  • Mama’ Fish House

    September 22nd, 2023

Mama’ Fish House is famous for a reason. The location next to the beach is peak Maui combined with outstanding food and service make it a destination. My husband and I were lucky enough to visit twice this trip so I have twice the dishes to show!

    Soup and bread service

Service at Mama’s has always come with bread and a small cup of bisque. The bread is a poppyseed loaf with some butter and the soups we got to try were a carrot ginger and then an asparagus broccoli. Both were great but I did like the asparagus more as it still had the spicy ginger notes but more body with pieces of broccoli. It’s a delectable combination to start your meal.

For drinks, I tried the lava flow and the guava punch. The lava flow was to sweet for me, it tasted good but was pretty generic. The guava punch was tart & tangy and just a touch sweet from the fruit juice, would recommend.

Husband tried the Papa’s Whiskey Sour. He seemed to enjoy that more than other drinks he’s had in the past.

    Soup and salad

For starters I tried the Mahi-Mahi Luau Soup and my husband had the Garden salad with Kula Strawberries, Dragon Fruit, Honey Pecans and Goat Cheese.

The soup had a coconut base broth that reminded me of something I couldn’t place. It’s tangy with large chunks of tender mahi-mahi and sweet potatoes. There’s also a large taro crisp that adds a nice earthiness to the soup. It was a bit more filling than I needed but I have no regrets.

My husband enjoyed his salad. The few bites I had were tasty. It had a nice balsamic vinaigrette that paired well with the strawberries and goat cheese. The greens were very fresh and bright as well.

Hawaiian Kanpachi baked with lobster and crab in a macadamia nut crust

The second entree I got was the Hawaiian Kanpachi baked with lobster and crab in a macadamia nut crust. It’s a very good dish with a well cooked lobster tail that gets bonus points for being easy to remove from its shell! It’s always a treat getting well cooked lobster, and it came with a nice sauce that I can’t remember the name of. The fish is flaky and has a crunchy mac-nut crust with an almost sweet crab filling. The dish is great and I would recommend it to anyone who likes lobster, fish and crab. But I can’t quit the curry offering.

    Mama’s Ahi and Mahi-Mahi curry

I love this curry. It’s a panang curry with plenty of crisp vegetables and moist fish inside the curry sauce. I have been getting this dish for years now and I will continue to get it for as long as it’s on the menu. It’s a huge portion and is generous with how much you’re getting. I like the variety of veggies with the fish as it makes the dish more interesting and gives it a depth of flavor. Everything pairs well with the curry which you will want to drink. At least I do.

    Mama’s Bouillabaisse

On our first visit my husband got the Bouillabaisse. It’s got a nice variety of seafood inside the broth as well as some veggies. It’s tangy and all the seafood is cooked tenderly. My husband gave me a scallop and it was perfectly cooked. This meal is his go to at Mama’s.

    Mahi-Mahi with onions and avocado

My husband got the mahi-mahi on the second visit. It was apparently good but lacked the variety, unique was and interest of the Bouillabaisse. It’s a nice big piece of fish, but it’s mostly just fish. Would recommend but not his preference.

    Black pearl

For dessert we finally tried the black pearl. I always dismissed it as an overly chocolate dish that was pretty but would disappoint if I tried it.

    I was very wrong.

It’s popular for a reason! It’s really good as the chocolate is not overpowering as the lilikoi sauce is super tart and goes well with the chocolate. The pearl itself has layers to it, the bottom is a chocolate sponge with chocolate mousse on top, with a core of vanilla custard that is delicious. The shell is a crunchy cookie that I used as a chip to scoop up the chocolate. It’s great. Get it. I’ve gotten almost every other dessert here and this is the one that is unique and stands out.

    View from the dining room

I love Mama’s. The history and the views are unparalleled and as a dining experience it’s something that can only exist in Maui. I think the best time to come is lunch, as it’s impossible to see the ocean past sunset and the vibe is chiller.

  • Maui Brewing Company

    September 20th, 2023
    Maui Brewing Company

My husband and I love Maui Brewing Company. The vibe here is chill and the food is tasty. The Kihei location is just off Piilani Highway and less than a 10 minute drive from Wailea. It’s a casual spot where you’re carded and given a wristband to show you’re of proper age before your allowed to find a table. Seating was “grab whatever table is available” when we were there in Sept 2023. We have experience times where they will seat you but it was busier then.

    Huli Huli Boneless Bites

One of my favorite eats here are the Huli Huli bites. They’re boneless chicken chunks that have a crispy skin coated in Huli Huli flavor with a side of ranch or blue cheese. They have never disappointed, I highly recommend grabbing some for your table.

What was left of our salad

The second go to item is the simple greens salad. It has a bright orange juice vinaigrette that is a touch sweet and a little sour. The salad usually comes with tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, radish and a mix of greens. It’s healthy and tasty!

    True North Mocktail

For beverages I have been told the beers are good but I don’t drink (My husband really enjoyed the POG IPA that was on the menu when we visited). I did try one of their mocktails called True North. It had a light taste lavender and citrus, but the more I drank the more it started tasting like lemonade. It was ok, not my favorite.

I do recommend trying the MBC root beer. It’s a dang good root beer and there’s a float version if you’re into that (you should be!).

    Nachos

We also snagged the nachos on our most recent visit. They have a nice mix of cheese and beans with a generous amount of sour cream and guacamole on top. I’m cursed with the bad cilantro gene so we got that on the side. The chicken we added on was ok. A bit dry and honestly didn’t add a lot. I do recommend the nachos, maybe skip the chicken.

    View from inside MBC

I would not recommend the fish tacos. Maybe I’m spoiled coming from SoCal but the fish was over cooked and there wasn’t much special about them.

MBC is a great spot to chill and relax. If you’re looking for a place to have a larger group of people this place is nice for that too as you pay via a QR code and folks can keep separate tabs. We will be returning, if only to snag the skillet cookie we haven’t had (this trip) yet!

  • Cabana Time

    September 17th, 2023

Snagged Cabana #21 at the Grand Wailea today. It’s a nice spot to relax but it’s prohibitively expensive at $600 for the standard. It came with fruit and banana bread in the morning, and several hours later we received a bag of snacks consisting of chips, candy and cookies.

Cabana lounge chair. Big enough 3 probably. Comfy for 2.

Check in time was at 7am. You normally get a choice of 3 locations but we didn’t get any of our choices as the top portion of pools had their cabanas closed today. I do wish someone would have let me know when we made the reservation. Still the spot we got was nice. It’s an easy spot to get in and out of the pool and close to the restrooms, water refill station and beach.

A step away from the water

It’s a nice place to relax, just don’t expect the timelines the Wailea gives you to be met. We were told on checkin that there would be snacks every 90 minutes, but when that starts is a mystery. Their website and confirmation system also has conflicting times for what the hours of the cabana are. I’m going to trust the time the attendant told us of 5pm.

Ordered a strawberry daiquiri from Surf Haus
Chips and salsa and queso from Surf Haus

You can also order food from the poolside bar and restaurant, Surf Haus. It’s not cheap (nothing at this hotel is) but they have pretty decent food if you’re feeling lazy/want to enjoy being by the pool.

    Snack delivery of popcorn

Overall it’s a relaxing place to chill by the pool and eat some snacks. Beware of the birds, they are always watching and waiting.
